A compelling premise but the opening didn’t grip me.

There is a lot of admire in what is definitely an ambitious premise and sounds like a sprawling family saga. Unfortunately I didn’t quite connect with the opening extract and felt there was something missing for me. Given that I would be spending over 500 pages in the company of the characters I wasn’t sure I cared enough to read on and felt that perhaps it’s not my kind of read.
