Social divides in our cultural history, has always been interesting to me and naturally when I saw that this book was an exploration of that I knew instantly that I wanted to read it.
Although quite a long novel, I was kept engaged throughout which in all honesty I was not expecting. I have never read anything by this author so I didn’t know what to expect with regard to the writing style or momentum, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The homely and wonderfully atmospheric feel to the book only added to its intrigue. The 1950s is recent and relatable to so many so I am under no illusion that this book will appeal greatly to a wide readership. A huge plus for me was the exploration of the relationships between wonderfully rounded and wholesome characters Drum and Carter. The depiction of their lives and their struggles to navigate their challenges was subtly and very cleverly done. All in all a pleasant experience, that did not disappoint.
