When this book landed on my doorstep I was a bit nervous about the huge size of it - I don't tend to reach for very long books and so was honestly a bit put off. However, I couldn't have been more wrong. Once I got stuck in, I was truly hooked and devoured it in only a few days.

This book is an epic tale covering two generations of the same family. We meet the parents as young adults, fresh in the world. The arc of the book covers their experiences meeting, falling in (and out) of love, becoming parents and growing old. These life events all run alongside real world events, including the Cold War, National Service, and foot and mouth. We also see how the family's life intersects with that of another family, one much richer and more privileged than them. It is an interesting, sometimes painful, relationship.

This book is packed with every experience you could imagine - falling in love, betrayals of trust, mental health issues, fear, desperation, the unique relationships of parents and children, privilege and more. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be truly immersed in a story. I couldn't believe it wasn't true!
