This book tells the life story of Drum and his family and his close ties with Carter. On paper they are the most unlikely friends, but they create an unbreakable bond that will see them through the rest of their lives. Set all through from the 50s to modern times, it is a fairly hefty read, which I really struggled to stay engaged with, but from the halfway pont to the end I was pretty gripped. I found the characters were quite unlikeable. None seemed to be particularly happy with anything at all. They all just trudged along in their mundane humdrum lives, not seeing the joy in anything. All with a massive chip on their shoulders. It would have been interesting to delve into carter's life more. I did enjoy his air of mystery. Was he telling the truth or just telling a fantasy. Either way, he had much more zest for life than Drummonds family and would probably have quite a few hair raising tales to tell.
I did enjoy the ending of the book. It was quite satisfying.
