We first meet Drum and carter who become friends when they are service men.It is a bit of a class divide as Carter is the richer one and Drum less so.

Carter the cad with his family.The book is more focused on Drums family though than Carters
Throughout the book we are reminded of the cold war and bombings.A little chilling I thought at times.
The story gets a little confusing sometimes as to who the writer is referring to as,it flips between parents and children.Not until you read further do you discover who it is.
The story also explores mental health,loyalty,betrayal,friendship and life.
I like the twist at the end of the book.
I was a little daunted a first at the size of the book but read through this epic tale.
