This novel by Stuart Evers is one that spans a 60 year period and tells of friendships, class and family. It also builds upon something which was considered a real threat at the time, that of the threat of nuclear destruction. I really enjoyed the opening of this book and its references to the seventies, a time period which I remember well, and I was also intrigued by the characters who were being portrayed and found the initial meetings with them interesting, wondering where it would all lead. As the book develops it concentrates on the relationship in1959 between working-class Drummond Moore and upper-class James Carter who meet while doing their national service at Doom Town, a nuclear training ground in Cumbria. The two become mutually dependent and their lives become intertwined despite the class differences. Some interesting themes are explored but as I continued reading I found it hard to generate much enthusiasm for the novel as a whole and it became a bit of a drudge reading to the end
