I was really looking forward to reading this book but I found it quite disappointing.
It starts off with Drummond back in 1959 during his National Service and starting his life with Gwen and close friend Carter who seemed to control and dominate him. For a least a third of the book it revolves around Drummond, Carter and Gwen and not a great deal more. I would have liked more involvement of each of their families and the lives they lived. It talks about a training ground where servicemen prepare for the aftermath of an atomic strike and how that would colour the rest of his life.
At the beginning of each chapter I was unsure of who I was reading about and had to guess until it was made clear.
I only started to enjoy reading it when the families were included and you got to see how their lives were split and fractured.
If the book was half the length of what it was then maybe I would have enjoyed it more.
