I liked the way the book began with an up to date section in 2019 and then went on to sections filling in the time from 1959 onwards in fairly short chapters.
Unfortunately I never really felt I got to grips with what the tale was about.
It seemed at times to ramble and I must admit I lost interest almost to the point of giving up and then the next chapter would draw me in again.
I found Drums obsession with the possibility of an atomic bomb dropping fitted the times but found Carter very difficult to fathom.
The characters of them, their wives and children were well written but the events did not always appear to knit together into a cohesive story.
They are two very dysfunctional families, with one particularly traumatic event driving them over the edge and fracturing the relationships.
It is a story of fear, politics and finally in the last section revenge of the younger generation.
