This is a good historical fiction book set in the late 18th century. The reverend Hardcastle is a well developed character who the authors portray very well. The same can be said for Mrs Chaytor. The novel follows their quest to solve the growing number of murders in Kent.

The story moves at a good pace throughout with a good element of suspense thrown in. I did feel however that the book fizzled our a bit towards the end and came to a sudden finish. The authors create a good picture of Kent at the time and the way in which this is described makes for a good atmosphere to the novel.

This is a really good debut novel though and one id recommended to fans of historical murder mystery books.
