The Book of Beginnings by Sally Page is a lovely, heart-warming story, with a vibrant, eye-catching cover.

This is the story of Joanne Sorsby, who moves to London to look after her uncle's hardware and stationery shop whilst he is temporarily receiving care in a nursing home close to Jo's parents in the north of England. Jo has many happy memories of holidays spent with her uncle, playing post offices in his tiny shop. The shop is one of three identical ones, tucked down an alley off Highgate High Street; both the shop and area are easily pictured as they are so well described.

This is a story of friendship. Jo's friendship with Lucy (her best friend since childhood), Eric from the shop next door, and Lando who owns the third shop in the row. She becomes great friends with two of her customers too - Ruth and Malcolm - and it is all these friendships which are the main focus of the story. It's beautifully written, very descriptive and both amusing and historical in parts. This is a lovely book which I thoroughly recommend.
