The Book of Beginnings by Sally Page is the story of Jo Sorsby who moves to London temporarily to look after her Uncle Wilbur’s stationery shop as he is unwell. The timing is perfect as Jo is running from some difficult times at home. Jo meets her fellow neighbours Eric (The Viking) and Lando the Tattooist, but more crucially some stationery customers - Ruth, a vicar fleeing her parishioners and Malcom fleeing life and himself. The book centres on these characters and their new relationships, as well as longer term friendships which are tested. It delves. into feelings; nostalgia, dreams, hopes for love and sadness at lost loves. There are heartfelt moments between friends and family members and a sensitivity to these situations and emotions.

I really enjoyed the book and the writing and I would recommend it. I felt a warmth, as though I was reading it wrapped in a heated blanket. The book is perfect for this time of year as it centres around Autumn and then Christmas. So read, relax and reminisce. I am off to find my fountain pen from the 1980’s.
