I was drawn into this story immediately and read it quickly. The descriptions of a fire (although deliberately started) and its effect on individuals, families, and communities could not be more moving or more topical. The physical devastation of fires is obvious to individuals and landscapes, but in this novel, Lefteri delves more deeply into the psychological effects and trauma that are not generally covered by the media and perhaps not addressed.
A powerful book, that made me feel sad and angry, especially as I am Greek and that fire was very recent, one of the most devastating disasters in my country's recent history which left us all hurt and scared. It is still raw, it happened only 5 years ago so the anger and all the unanswered questions are still there. People are still trying to build their lives through the ashes whilst mourning their dead and Christy Leftery showed respect and compassion.
