This story is set in a small village on a lovely island. At the start of the story, the village and it`s inhabitants have been devastated by a fire that took place some months earlier. The main characters are Irini, her husband Tasso and their daughter Chara. They all live in the village and all their lives have been affected by the fire.
The first few pages of the books tells how Irini is out walking her dog one morning when she finds a person slumped against a tree . This person is obviously not well and Irini knows she should call for somebody to help him. The reason she leaves this person where he is , is because the person she has found is the business man whose actions caused the fire that has affected so many of Irini`s family and friends.
However, she spends the next few hours feeling guilty so she goes back to where she found him later that day. The man is now dead , Irini calls the police but she pretends she has just found him.
Was she right to leave him when she did, or should she have got help earlier?
