This was a beautifully written book, almost poetic in its approach.

The story has a fairly simple plot line about a fire and the tragedy that follows. There is, however, an optimistic feel to the story, not just in the characters and how they support and overcome their personal losses, but also in the message about the beauty of nature and the comfort small things can provide. There is also a very strong message about not taking some of the simple pleasures we have for granted. The author achieves all of this without being preachy and by weaving it into the narrative of the storyline.

The book is narrated by the main character, Irinin, in two timelines, which the author mixes seamlessly. One is told in a past timeline as the fire is occurring and one in the current timeline of the consequences and emotions after the fire.

With weather catastrophes always being in the headlines, this book is very relevant. The author has done an excellent job of describing and conveying the loss and sadness of the characters and how they deal with it.
