I sat down with this book and didn't move a muscle until I finished it a few hours later. I was completely engrossed in this emotional story.
In The Book of Fire, we follow the fairly simple story of Irini and the immediate aftermath of a fire that destroys an entire forest and town and kills a number of the residents. Irini's daughter and husband are badly injured - both physically and mentally - and her father-in-law is missing, presumed dead. We read about how the fire has affected the whole community, as well as the individuals. There is also discussion of environmental responsibility, as fires become more common and more uncontrollable due to climate conditions.
This book was extremely emotional and heavy and was so well-written. The sentences were very lyrical, whilst still conveying the unbearably heavy sentiments. The themes of grief, death and tragedy weigh heavily in this book but are dealt with perfectly.
Overall, this was such a difficult book to read but it was excellently done.
