The Book of Fire by Christy Lefteri is a book about a family caught up in a wild fire that destroys not only their home and their village but the forest all around them both injuring and killing people and wildlife. The book gives you background knowledge of the main character Irini and her husband Tasso and daughter Chara who both are badly burned and effected by the fire but also of others they come across during the disaster and after as people try to help them.
Irini is also riddled with guilt as after the fire, while walking her dog she comes across the man they now know was responsible for starting the fire, he is almost dead and she leaves him sat under the tree with the broken branch and rope. She eventually goes back but it's too late. He had spoken a few words and she is left unsure as to how he died, did he try to commit suicide or did some of the locals do this.
It left me thinking that after the news reports of these fires we hardly ever see how people cope and rebuild their lives and community
