This book is very topical. Initially I thought that it was going to be a book written to "cash in" on current global warming and the summer of wildfires across the globe - but from the depth of the research into the actual effects on people's lives, and the time taken to write it, this is not the case. Global warming is topical, but usually reported about concerns on large scale events, but Christy Lefteri has used her experiences to bring this down to a person to person level. Her writing skill has made this intensely vivid, powerful and very sensitive. We live through the anguish, fear, and backlash of an extensive wildfire in Greece. The devastation of forests, animals, birds, insects, houses and people, all dying, is happening because of one man's greed. He wants to clear forest land for a luxury hotel development, against unenforced planning rules. What happens to him is brilliantly portrayed - but I will not give anything away. The powerful interaction between the members of the family who are all impacted by the fire and its aftermath, including their pet dog, leaves you riveted to the page. The unfolding emotions and drama are so well written that I couldn't put it down and read it all in one day. The style is super, easy to read, with detail so dramatic, vivid, and sharply portrayed you can feel the heat and smell the cold ash, and understand the trauma and deep despair that the survivors feel. This is a sensitive area and is handled so empathetically - unusually so - it makes this book stand out. I thoroughly recommend this book, and once you have read it, you will never forget it, and by the way, it has an uplifting ending as the human spirit struggles though to start rebuilding anew. .
