This was such an atmospheric book which really made you think about what you'd do if you were in the same situation. The scenes of the fire were really vivid and well-written, and the emotion of the characters shines through. It was clever to keep popping back to the past with the 'book of fire' chapters as Irini tries to rebuild her life and family. After she finds Mr Monk in the woods, it does get a little repetitive as she tries to decide whether to go to the police or not, and in the end you only get an idea of what may have happened to him; the ends aren't tied up as neatly as I'd like (but I like closure!). Even so, it is a book which stays with you, particularly with the climate change stories in the news at the moment, and you imagine what you'd do if you lived in a part of the world which was affected by instances like this. All in all, a vivid and thought-provoking read.
