This is a beautiful book to read. It is so moving and thought provoking. The story is told by Irini whose family have been fleeing the wildfires in Greece. She starts by writing a journal about what has happened and the impact on her family. It is truly devastating to read about the destruction of the houses and forests and the impact on wildlife. We find out the fire has been started on purpose by a greedy property developer. The impact on her husband Tasso is severe, he is burnt badly and cannot work anymore on his paintings. His daughter desperately tries to help him.
The novel centres around doing the right thing. There are some beautiful descriptions of the tiny village and you can feel the atmosphere and the resilience of the local people. This is a novel about greed , about climate change and the destruction of the wildlife and homes of these people. I loved reading about the family and the strength they showed in trying to recover.
