Never has a book been more apt than this year with the wildfires that have been terrorising parts of Europe, including Greece.
This book is a story of incredible sadness and loss; for a home, a place, people, but also a story that has been prewritten and come to fruition.
Irini, her daughter Chara and her husband Tasso are the victims of a wildfire in their little village in Greece. Unfortunately for them the fire was started by a property developer who wanted to clear some land to build a small hotel on it. The fire got out of hand, and coupled with years of long droughts, the land went up in smoke, literally! Many people died or were severely injured and a lot of people lost their homes and worldly possessions.
After the chaos had died down, Irini went for a walk in the now barren land that was once a thriving forest. It was here that she finds the man who started the fire, at the base of an old chestnut tree, a noose around his neck, barely breathing. It is what she does next that makes the story.
Lots of hidden meanings in this story, definitely worth a read.
