One day Keira is celebrating the New Year with her husband, teenage children and friends and then just a few days later she is sitting in a clinic finding out that she has cancer. At first she is in semi denial, but gradually realises that this is something that she must face up to. Keira is used to being in charge at work in her shop, selling pretty ceramic ware, but very soon she realises that something else will be in charge of her.
After a chance meeting in the local park with a jogger, she is soon drawn into a group which consists of women in the different stages of cancer, and thus a new supportive network is formed offering friendship, help and often a shoulder to cry on. As time goes on and Keira has to endure the treatment to cure the cancer in her body, she finds that although she doesn't want the cancer to rule her life, unfortunately it is and its also causing family difficulties and work colleagues to almost ignore her and she still doesn't like being part of the "cancer club". But when she starts her chemo, she and the medication fight together to get rid of the cancer, but now it's not just the cancer that Keira has to get rid of! Someone that she works with at Wishwells (her shop) is also taking advantage of her, she is so sure of this but doesn't know how to tackle it, or is it more than taking advantage, are they trying to oust her out of Wishwells! When she gets one of her oldest friends to investigate things at the shop for her, she is not happy with what she finds out. On top of all this she finds out that one of the running club ladies Tamsin, is much more sick than she had been led to believe and this prompts Keira to do something about it in the form of running to raise money to send Tamsin to Mexico for treatment. So a money raising group is formed, although more and more involvement is needed to raise the much needed funds and Keira feels that it is up to her to do as much as possible for her dear friend.
There is a lot of details about cancer treatment, so a lot of research must have gone into this book and when you reach the end and find out the author has gone through this herself, you can't help but feel great respect for her and other women going through this at the moment. I found this book to be uplifting, humbling, sad and full of warmth that has you rooting for all the women going through this experience.
