Written in the first person perspective, we get into the head of the protagonist Saffy and also as her friend Tom.

The opening narration gives us a flavour for Saffron’s life, having just discovered a dark secret about her Dad, which links to her mother’s disappearance 10 year ago.

Upset she runs to the park, crouches on the dog urine covered floor, then Tom enters to save the day. We learn that Saffron is a ginger, and Tom is some kind of swashbuckling hero to Saffron. Tom is hansom, Saffy does not think she’s pretty, the author putting across a negative vibe on the gingers.

The characters are strong and mostly authentic, the plot is good, adding the right air of mystery about the lost=dead mother. But I didn’t like the stereotype of the “ugly highly strung ginger” in need of the tall hansom blond chap who is 2 years her senior, which at 17 and 19 society judges to be an acceptable age gap for an intimate relationship. On the face of it, this novel looks a little too predictable, but it is well written so could be a very enjoyable read.
