Overall this was quite a good story, and the plot did throw in a few interesting surprises. However, I thought that the conclusion of the book was a little predictable, and I also sometimes felt like the book was only serving as a vehicle to address the social issues relating to homelessness. I think the motivation was good and the characters sensitively portrayed, it was just a little heavy-handed in the writing. In terms of the main characters, Tom was surely too good to be true, but I enjoyed Saffron's teenage total self-centredness and rage, and the brusque relationship she has with her brother Daniel - I thought that these were the most realistic parts of the novel. The format was interesting too, dividing the book into one part for every day, and all the action taking place over one week.
