Unfortunately, The Colour of Shadows just didn't do it for me. This is a book that deals with some very heavy topics that need to be handled with care, such as teenage homelessness and the trauma of Saffron's father having lied to her for so much of her life. However, these topics were not dealt with in a sensitive way and I found Saffron to be a thoroughly unlikeable character. A character doesn't need to be likeable for a book to be good, of course, but it's a very character driven story that I struggled with due to my dislike of Saffron. She came off as shallow and mean, especially with the focus on her dislike for the homeless. She is supposed to be self-centred, but I had hoped that would change throughout the story.
