I was very pleasantly surprised by this first look – I'm not usually drawn to historical romances/sagas like this (or their covers), but the elements of intrigue and mystery scattered throughout, and the nuances of the characters we've met so far have me curious to find out more.
The gruff, fearsome Jacques Martin was a great character to start the book with – as a reader, you immediately sense the danger Madeleine is in, and it adds a high-stakes element to the story. I want to know more about Jacques Martin, and why he is so determined to pursue this particular case, and I'm looking forward to his narrative as he chases Madeleine down.
As for Madeleine, her story of loss and imprisonment is so sad, and I only want the best for her. She is already such a sensitively-written character that I'm looking forward to the development she'll see when her freedom is restored.
