When Madeline is imprisoned she doesn't let on she used to be part of the higher eschelons of society. She is sent from madhouse to doghouse for a number of years and survives by keeping quiet about her past life. But she is determined to find out why this has happened to her . She meets a Captain Pierre de la Croix, a french prisoner, and decides to put some trust in him to help her in her time of need. She slowly begins to put the pieces of her past together. She begins to find out who were her friends and who were in fact her enemies and plotted against her to get her put away.........and why. In the 1800's it was difficult for a woman to try and prove her innocence but with help Madeline does her best. A lot of women entering the madhouse were to find that they stayed there for the rest of their lives with no hope of freedom. But could Madeline be different ? The author gets you gripped to the pages wanting to know if there is a good outcome for the main character ....and if there could be love
