This story takes place in Cornwall in 1800 and the main character is a young woman named Madeleine Pelligrew. At the start of the story Madeleine has been rescued from a madhouse where she has just spent the last fourteen years of her life.
Madeleine was made to believe that her mental health suffered badly after she lost her husband and baby but she knows that she has never been mad, and that she was falsely put in the madhouse. So after she has been rescued , she tries to find out more about the people who had done this to her. She finds work in her old home and she starts to uncover secrets about her dead husband. He was not the man that she thought he was and she finds out that even her own marriage was not genuine.
While on this long and exhausting journey to find out the truth, Madeleine meets someone who is to become the love of her life. That is if she can trust anybody enough to be able to love again.
