Unfortunately, I did not realise until I received the book from Readers First, that Nicola Pryce`s The Cornish Captive is the 6th book in the Cornwall series. I was worried I needed to read the previous ones to follow the story, but that doesn't seem to be the case, luckily.

This story is set in the 1800s, and tells the tale of Madeleine Pelligrew, former mistress of Pendenning Hall, who is imprisoned under false pretences, and so has spent the last 14 years shuttled between increasingly destitute and decrepit mad houses.

The story really picks up once she is released and meets a dashing French prisoner on parole, Captain Pierre de la Croix. I have not read historical fiction in a little while and it was a nice refreshing change to live in the 1800's with Madeleine and the descriptions of the life and times made it a nice light easy read for me.
