Far more exciting, dangerous and twisty than the first impression might lead you to believe, this is the tale of Lady Madeleine, once mistress of a grand estate, and how her life was brutally and craftily upended.

The story sweeps you up into the drama of Madeleine's life, as she escapes the 'madhouse' she is wrongly imprisoned in and goes searching for her husband's killer. Along the way she faces disbelief, doubt, betrayal and fear, but also finds a group of fine friends, a solid support network and a budding new love.

The tale plays with insanity and disbelief brilliantly, while commenting on the brimming war between France and England, the spy networks that infiltrated the English coast and the way the lives of countless women were controlled, manipulated and often ruined by powerful men.

This is the sixth novel in Nicola Pryce's Cornish Saga, but it can be read as a standalone – I can attest to this, as I haven't read any of the others (I picked this up without realising it was part of a series) and it read like a single volume.

I recommend this for lovers of historical romance and coastal England in the 1800s.
