I received a free copy of this book from Readers First in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the front cover of this book – the scene just really helped set the story for me and I found it good to visualise the protagonist, Madeleine, more in my mind. The author has a talent for weaving such vivid portraits of her characters that you just cannot help becoming endeared towards them. I felt a really strong connection with this book from the very first few chapters.
Upon receiving this book I discovered it is actually the sixth book in a series and was worried I would have missed out on things from the previous books and so struggle to get into it. Although I certainly want to read the other books now, and wish I had read them before this book certainly works absolutely fine as a stand-alone novel. I also hope Pryce continues to follow on with even more novels in this series! At times the amount of characters was a bit tricky to grasp but it does have a list of characters at the front and some family trees which help break things down a bit (sometimes I do find those sort of additions to a book off-putting but it was ok to help set the context for me this time).
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this novel – I felt like I was back in Cornwall experiencing all the events and wandering the same paths. It kept me anticipating what was going to happen next and I did not guess any of the plot twists or mysteries that are unveiled. It flows well, sets a decent pace and all the characters are well fleshed out. I read it really quickly and was sad when it came to an end. Will definitely be reading more by this author.
