From the first chapter I was absolutely enthralled by this book.
There were a few moments of confusion around the character Rowan, whether she was a maid or a fellow inmate, but I’m fascinated by Madeleine (nee, Elizabeth) and would love to know more about her story. Is she a royalist spy, and just who exactly is her brother? Will she fall for the agent, or the leader of the ring we meet in the first chapter? Is she mad, or has she just been driven to madness by her captivity and surroundings? Did her husband really drown, or is there more at play? I’ve so many questions - this was a fantastic start to a book, one of the more gripping I’ve started in a long time, and I wish I had it in front of me to continue reading more. It’s a unique historical romance for certain - and one I can’t wait to continue and review properly. I wish we’d had more time in the madhouse, as it’s a setting you don’t often see, but I imagine we’ll be treated to many flashbacks as the book goes on
