This book tells the story of a woman wrongly kept prisoner in numerous madhouses because of alleged insanity. Madeline Pelligrew a young French woman married to an English man who lives in a large estate employing servants. After her husband is murdered she is removed from her home by the new owner and sent away to recover from her grief which he has recorded as madness to keep her locked up for fourteen years.

Unexpectedly Madeline is released by a fellow Frenchman claiming to have been looking for her on behalf of her brother and along with her cell mate Rowan, an orphan, they travel back to the town where her husband is killed under a different name Mrs Barnard in the hope of trying to find out what really happened.

On the coach back to her home Madeline and Rowan meet Captain Pierre De la Croix, a Frenchman on parole who helps war prisoners adjust to their new surroundings but they are unsure whether to trust him.

Many characters appear throughout the book who remember her as Madeline Pelligrew and help cover up her identity as they too have had issues with the man who hid her away and had her husband killed.

This is the first time I have read any books by this author but will look for others in the series.
