Having not read the other books in the series wasn't a problem ad this is a story in itself. I did feel the cover of the book makes it feel a little bit dated but is a good read.

Madeline loses her husband, unborn baby, lifestyle and freedom after being put in an mental asylum to stop her discovering what really happened to her husband and money.
The descriptions are really vivid and I could really feel the pain she has to go through. Madeline is helped by lovely people but is also having to be so careful that she isn't discovered to be free as she would be imprisoned again and it feels that she can't trust anyone.
Captain Pierre is a fascinating character as you are not sure until the end if he is good or bad and you are left waiting to discover which side he is on.
I am not normally a fan of historical fiction however I did enjoy this book and found it was a style I would pick again.
