I knew that this book was part of a saga before I read it. I wasn’t aware that it was the sixth book in the saga and, to be fair, it didn’t really matter. The book stands up for itself admirably. Having said that, I wont be seeking out the other books in the saga. That’s just personal choice; it’s just not one of my preferred genres.

To me it’s a fairy tale set in a real place and time. A riches to rags to riches tale.

I know Cornwall and I like historical novels but I prefer the more gruesome side of fairy tales.

It’s very well written, which always helps, and I was invested in the characters. Sadly, I didn’t get along with the heroine, and that’s fine, but I loved Eva Pengelly and her whole household. The details of Madeleine’s imprisonment and her time in mad houses rang very true, it was the way she landed on her feet that had me rolling my eyes. There’s luck and then there are fairy tales I guess, and they usually have a happy ending.

I also like the “despatches” and the note at the end. I felt it was a nice touch.

Thank you to Readers First, Corvus and Nicola Pryce for the ARC in return for my honest review.
