This is my first time reading a book by Nicola Pryce, so I haven’t read the previous five books in the series. However that wasn’t a problem for reading this book.

This was a book that made me feel angry about how Madeleine had been treated, so Nicola Pryce has created a character for the reader to care deeply about. Madeleine lost her husband suddenly, lost her unborn child and house, and then her identity. After escaping, she discovers that her country of birth, France is now at war with England, her marital home.

The story involves many secrets and unpleasant characters, as well as people eager to help Madeleine move forward with her life. One of my favourite parts of the book is when two doctors are asked to declare her mentally sound.

This isn’t one of the genres I normally read, but I enjoyed this book, and I’m happy to recommend it. I’ve only watched a couple of episodes of Poldark, but I believe that if you are a fan of the series, that you will also enjoy this book (and the rest of the series).
