The Cornish Captive is about the mistress of Pendenning Hall and is set in the 1800s. The story explains how she came to be falsely imprisoned in one madhouse after another as a means to silencing her for what she knew. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, following Madeleine's suffering and isolation and seeing the bond that developed with Rowan. Once she is granted her freedom by a stranger, the real complexities of the story begin to build. She is unsure who to trust but eventually a friendship with Captain Pierre de la Croix leads to love. Madeleine is understandably set upon revenge but as more twists and turns take place it appears that her original target may not be who she thought but the twists keep on coming. Madeleine does get her revenge and find true love but I found the final unravelling of the last few chapters to be a bit confusing. Overall an enjoyable read but felt like the last bit seemed rushed as everything came together.
