This is a set around 1800’s in Cornwall at the height of the French Revolution. The main character, Madeleine Pelligrew, has spent 14 years in various mad houses after her grief over losing her husband and baby was mistaken for insanity. She is released but has to keep her identity a secret and tries to learn the reasons she was imprisoned and why her husband died with some help.
This is a very enjoyable historical fiction laced with mystery, spies, murder and corruption. this has a good plot, interesting characters and was well paced. I was interested in the story throughout and would read more from this author in the future. I also didn’t realise this was the sixth in a series when I picked it up, but it’s actually a very good standalone read, you don’t need to have read the others to understand what is happening or to really enjoy this one.
