This is the story of Madeleine Pelligrew, the past mistress of the prestigious Pendenning Hall. At the start of the novel, set in 1800, Madeleine is just coming out of 14 years living in various accommodations for ‘the mad’ and under numerous identities. Trusting no one other than a young girl called Rowan she starts to rebuild her life and discover who she is and who can help her.

She befriends Captain Pierre de la Croix, a French prisoner but can she trust him?

There are a number of characters throughout but the family tree at the beginning helps with this. I had to refer back several times!

This is the sixth book in the Cornish saga series by Nicola Pryce although I would say that each book could be read individually. The series would be enjoyed by any fan of 19th century historical fiction. I liked it, in part, because I am Cornish born and bred so I love all of the local references. It is an easy read, a good length and a great cover picture of Bodmin Moor.
