This wasn’t exactly what I expected it to be, I haven’t read any of the author’s other books from this series so perhaps I was at a bit of a disadvantage.

The story is set in the 1800s when England and France are at war. In England a woman who has been imprisoned in an asylum for 14 long years is about to be released thanks to a mysterious stranger. Obviously, she is pretty pissed off that 14 years of her life have been cruelly ripped away from her and she is now out for revenge!

I was particularly interested in what our main character Madeleine went through while she was incarcerated, and I must say considering she was treated so badly she came out of it all remarkably well and I found that kind of hard to believe. She does find it very difficult to trust people but that seems to be the only way her past has affected her.

It took me a while to get into the flow of things as the writing style is not really to my taste, but it did end up being a decent story, predictable but decent!

I feel that this series caters for a certain group of readers and I’m not in that group unfortunately. Overall I’d say give it a go, it is written well and if you like your Historical fictions to be a bit far fetched and out there then this book and perhaps the whole series is for you!
