Madeleine Pelligrew is the mistress of Pendenning Hall and is taken from her life of privilege and wealth and falsely imprisoned for the next 14 years in terrible conditions in various mad houses. Her incarceration takes its toll and though she has kept her sanity she has been very badly treated. She has been moved on numerous occasions and each asylum has worse causing her to trust no one. So that when a man appears and says he is from her brother and will take her to France and to her freedom she does not know whether to trust him as she has been let down so much in the past.

This book mentions characters in the author's other book The Captain's Girl but there is not need to read the other book first as it will stand alone as it did for me and I followed the story well. I found that the Family Tree section of the book was very useful though. There are rather a lot of characters and it is easier to find out were they fit in.

I found Madeleine's journey to be very interesting and felt so sorry for her as at times you were turned against one person then another and it took most of the book to find out who she could trust. I really recommend this if you like Cornwall and especially if you like the Poldark stories which this reminds me very much of.
