I haven’t read any other books by this author and was quite intrigued by the opening chapters. It is set in 1800 when England and France are at war. In France a ruthless man is searching for royalist spies. In England a woman unjustly imprisoned in an asylum for 14 years is about to be released and to meet a French prisoner who may or may not be one of the good guys. Revenge is on her mind and luckily for her quite a lot of things fall into place without too many problems.
It is one of a series set in Cornwall and I assume the previous books, which I am unlikely to ever read, dealt with the romances leading to the numerous happy marriages depicted in this book! It seems churlish to complain that something is far-fetched but the lady certainly made a very good recovery considering the treatment she was supposed to have suffered. I kept on thinking that if her diet has been that bad surely all her teeth would’ve dropped out by now. But the real dampener was the extraordinary perfection of the hero – if indeed he was the hero. I was delighted that all my guesses turned out to be correct and I can’t believe that many readers would’ve had too many problems. So there was no tension, just very flowery writing which could perhaps have done with more editing
This is obviously written to a formula and those who like the formula will be perfectly happy with this book. Wasn’t for me though
