It's October and Clare is returning to live with her mother in her childhood home in Little Bramble following her divorce from Jason after being with him for 26 years and married for 22 years. Everything has changed in Clare's life, as well as the divorce she's been made redundant from her job in the library and Kyle, her only son, is now at university. Clare hasn't been a regular visitor to her childhood home particularly since the death of her father ten years previously as she had a better relationship with him than with her mother but, at the moment, going home seems the right, maybe even the only, thing to do. The author, Cathy Lake. also introduces her readers to Sam who has recently moved into the village with his younger sister after buying a share in the local veterinary practice. Elaine, Clare, mother, has a great dane called Goliath and has suggested Clare also gets a dog for company and to go out walking with as Clare has recently put on weight with comfort eating during the divorce. Clare finds herself running the village Christmas show, The Country Village Christmas Show of the title, and it seems inevitable that Clare and Sam will meet at some time perhaps in the vets or maybe Sam becomes involved in the show. Christmas books always have a great feelgood factor, just what readers want in the run-up to Christmas.
