Clare is 45 and newly divorced. She finds herself having to move back to her childhood home and live with her Mum. Her Mum used to be at the heart of the village amateur dramatic society, but since the old village hall burned down that part of her life has ended. This is the backdrop to Clare’s decision to cheer her Mum up by organising a Christmas talent show in the new village hall.
In a parallel story line, Clare is forced to take on walking her Mum’s Great Dane, Goliath, although she has no experience with dogs of any size, let alone an unruly giant. This means that she soon meets the village vet, a man who has his own problems. From unpromising beginnings, they soon find an attraction that takes them both by surprise.
Some of the story is quite predictable, but that is part of the appeal of the book. It’s a lovely and comforting tale, with enough happening that it keeps you turning the pages, hoping for a happy ending. It leaves you wondering what happens next, which is always a good thing.
