Great!
Inspired by real events and real people, The Courtesan is a great book focused on the period of the Qing Dynasty. Set in the 1800s main character Jinhua is sold to a Brothel and has to undertake the worst things life can throw at her. Jinhua accompanies a scholar around Austria Hugary, Prussia and Russia unaware of the way she will view life when she comes back home.
I thought that this book was completely original, and unlike anything I had ever read before. I enjoyed how it was a novel which was based on real life events and people, which prompted me to go and research further into the life of the main character.
I also thought that the language used within this book flowed gorgeously, putting me into the setting without any 'bumpy period' where I had to re-immerse myself in this world. This, combined with the story which was full of pain and sorrow, stayed with me even after I had finished.
