One of my favourite books of all time - stunning, mystical and completely enthralling!

This book follows Jude, whose parents are killed in front of her when she is a child. She and her sisters are subsequently whisked off to the fae world (which exists alongside our own) where they are raised as adoptive children of a high-ranking general.

This book had an incredible writing style, Holly Black is truly a gifted and imaginative author. She creates a rich and detailed fae world which feels darker and more sinister than most fantasy worlds I've encountered before. The rules feel believable and the stakes palpable. The political intrigue and compelling plot was another highlight of the book for me, and I loved watching Jude scheme and sneak her way through this world. She is the epitome of a morally grey protagonist, which I truly love as it makes for a thrilling ride for the audience.

If I had to give one criticism of this book, it would be that the romance is not very fleshed out and sometimes feels underwhelming. This being said, having read the other books in the series, I can confirm that Black definitely develops and expands on the core relationship I urge any new readers to pick up the whole trilogy, it just gets better as it goes on!
