The Cruel Prince is an exquisitely dark, intricately crafted novel showcasing Holly Black at the height of her writing career. The complexity of the main characters, such as Jude's calculated impulsiveness and Cardan's passionate indifference, will pull at your heartstrings and truly transport you into the land of Faerie!
While the writing style is sophisticated and vivid yet easy to follow and the plot is perfect for those who like a fast-paced storyline, I think that the best part of the book was the character development; Holly Black has the rare ability to make me truly despise one character and adore another.
I understand why some readers may find some elements of the plot (especially the romances) to be an overdone stereotype of YA fiction but if, like me, sappy romance is a guilty pleasure, then the cliches shouldn't bother you too much.
With that said, I will eagerly await the second book in the trilogy! I can only hope it lives up to my expectations!
