This book starts with an excellent map which is very helpful and good to refer to during the story.
Beginning with a brief history including a viscious murder. Jude ends up living in Elfhame with her twin Taryn (nice name!) and her half sibling Viv, with the murderer of her mother and step-father, Madoc, who is also Vivi's father. He works very close to the throne and so Jude gets to know the royals and the royal entourage very well. Although she is human, she goes to 'school' with the other Faeries where she is bullied and badly mistreated.
Madoc's secret allegiances, cruel Cardan, beautiful Locke and the fruit! But I genuinely think it's best if you go into this book knowing as little as I did.
Jude is a brilliant, furious creature -- the product of murder, danger and brutality, strength built upon her fragility and weaknesses as a mere mortal, easily swayed and damaged by the world around her.
This is a fabulous story, with unusual twists that get you thinking as well as a moral undercurrent. This book is well paced and enjoyable from start to finish. Plus, it has a beautiful cover. I wish I had bought it in hardback as I shall certainly be reading it again and sharing with friends.
