The cover of this book drew me in, and the illustration at the beginning of each chapter is charming. I had high expectations, even though this is not the usual kind of book that I read.
The Cruel Prince is a well-written and descriptive novel, and a good start to the series. However, I thought that the story was rather slow to begin with, after the first few gripping pages which were an excellent introduction to the story.
I don't want to give away the plot, but there are some nasty people and awful goings-on in this book. I can't say that I really liked any of the characters very much, but on the other hand I don't think I was meant to.
The story got much better in the second half, although it still didn't grip me as much as I thought it would. I would, however, be happy to read the next installment.
