If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.

Overall this was an average read for me. After the highs of the ACOTAR series as my first foray into the fantasy genre, I had high expectations. I have heard so many amazing things about this whole series, which i think built up my hopes for something equally amazing, but sadly i was a little let down. I will still carry on with the series as I did still enjoy it.

Jude is such an amazing character - albeit morally grey - and it was so interesting to see her perspective as a human in the faerie world. I enjoyed her thoughts as she grew up surrounded by the fae, raised by the man who murdered her parents, and living as effective royalty in a world of magic. The way she created herself to be resistant to the torment of her faerie peers, crafting herself into a character that could survive in the world of the fey. It really examined what makes a person a villain, and I found it to be a really great read.

I initially didn’t like Cardan - but over the course of the novel he really grew on me as a character. I think because all the characters were quite villainous and morally grey that I was able to like him as a character. I’m really excited to learn how the series progresses in The Wicked King.

One thing I didn’t enjoy is that I found some elements of the plot to be quite obvious and predictable, and I wanted to be a little more surprised. But, saying that, there were some elements I definitely didn’t predict!
