The Cruel Prince was probably not a book that I would have chosen for myself in a bookshop, not because I wouldn't necessarily have enjoyed it but just because I don't tend to read stories about fairies. However, I was easily enveloped in the world and loved reading about the different characters and the way they all interacted. I liked trying to guess how they would respond to each other and who were the good characters and the not so good ones. Something that kept me guessing throughout the book as it certainly wasn't black and white. I enjoyed the development of the characters, especially Jude and Vivi. I found it interesting to work out who I thought might like who and was especially pleased the times I got it right!

The characters were fairly strong - they felt real in that they had the strengths and weaknesses that real people might have and they had both good and bad within them. Unlike many stories there was no good or bad characters at such, all had flaws - just some were more likeable than others. I definitely felt that there was so much emphasis on Prince Cardan being a bad character that he was bound not to be as bad as expected and I'm still wondering whether that is the case.

Their world was believable and the descriptions were brilliant for helping you imagine each of the scenarios from balls to battles.

It was a story that I kept wanting to read more of and I am impatient to read the next one in the series so hope it isn't too long until it is out!
